David James Stewart is an American theologian, philosopher, and amateur baseballer.

Born in Minneapolis, Stewart is currently the Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN and adjunct professor of theology at St. Catherine University. He earned a Ph.D. in theology from Luther Seminary, where he was trained in Western and continental traditions. His areas of expertise are philosophical theology, the intersection of science and religion, and outlandish Game of Thrones theories.

Stewart recently completed his first book, which will be released by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in the fall of 2019. It explores the implications of a cooperative reading between G. W. F. Hegel’s speculative philosophy and Stephen Hawking’s quantum cosmology.

Past work includes publications on the thought of Charles TaylorCarl JungMichael Polanyi, and David Brown. Current research interests involve the question of the origins of self-conscious subjectivity, the genesis of religion, the neurophysiological basis of “dialectical” thinking, non-instrumentalist Copenhagen interpretations of quantum mechanics, Basarab Nicolescu’s notion of “transdisciplinarity,” Jung’s idea of synchronicity, and how all of this opens up new ways of thinking about Hegel’s speculative idealism and Naturphilosophie.

When not teaching, reading, or writing, Stewart roams the outfield for the New Market Muskies, a local amateur baseball team. He also manages a fall-ball team for the Minnesota Mash, a private baseball academy. Formerly the Resident Theologian at Awaken Community, he is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Hegel Society of America, the Polanyi Society, and Mensa.
